It is not uncommon for someone to be in more than one type of debt. In some cases, the same collector will be used to collect these multiple debts that you owe, which can be convenient in some cases. Fortunately, you and only you control your debts. The collector has to apply the payment to the debt you select and cannot chose for you under any circumstance. Also, a collector can’t apply a payment to a debt you don’t think you owe. Unless a lawyer is representing you, debt collectors are only allowed to talk to you about your debt. They may only contact others to get information about you such as your address. Collectors will continue to contact you, so it is in your best interest to talk to them at least once especially if a mistake was made and can be possibly cleared up during the phone call.
